I love dogs. When I was a kid my dad shot my favorite German Shepherd right in front of me to “end its joint suffering.” He screwed it up and the dog ran into the woods to suffer and die alone. Never forgave my dad for that.

Dogs love unconditionally. I bet Cricket loved Kristi right up to the second she murdered him. My dog gave me one last accusing and bewildered look over her shoulder before she fled to die.

“How could we?”

i'm so sorry. that was awful.

I saw a piece Joan Walsh did about Kristi Noem's daughter who asked "where's Cricket". I still feel the loss from when our parents rehomed our dogs when I was a kid. Grateful they didn't opt for killing them. I'm so sorry this happened to you and your dog.

I’m so sorry. My dad left my beloved German shepherd in the yard under a tree to die slowly in pain after he left the gate open and my dog got hit by a car. I was around 7 years old.

When I read the story about Kristi Noem, I immediately thought to myself “she has eliminated the competition for Dingus of the Week!”

If you can afford a weapon and ammunition, you can afford to hire a dog trainer. Also, animal shelters exist!

Meant to ask: What does that Biblical passage have to do with oral hygiene?

Expand full comment

Nothing! The donkey in question was rescued and needed a lot of dental care when the new owners got him. Otherwise, there is nothing. But in my opinion, it doesn't matter. People misuse the Bible for all sorts of bad things. This time it's being used for something good!

thanks. now i don't have to search for the answer myself which i was (almost) ready to do!

“If this donkey deserves dental care, so do you!” Works for me.

According to the SD Senate Minority Leader, she was trying to get ahead of the story:

"But South Dakota Democratic Senate Minority Leader Reynold Nesiba considered the disclosure more calculated than stupid. He said the story has circulated for years among lawmakers that Noem killed a dog in a “fit of anger” and that there were witnesses. He speculated that it was coming out now because Noem is being vetted as a candidate for vice president."

I suspect both of these elected officials are being advised by Garfield's consulting firm, which accepts payment only in lasagna and nap coupons while using a vision board full of canine public enemies as part of its promotional campaign. Watch your ass, Snoopy.

Dogs get more empathy because they don't fare well on their own any more - especially in a world that asks them to go against their instincts. I was so angry about Noem shooting the dog, and then I saw tweets and threads deriding people for caring more about dogs than Gazans. I can do both. I contain multitudes. Any way- I'm ending this difficult week by attending the Violent Femmes in Eugene tonight - in the rain!!! That's the kind of Northwesterner I am. I bought a rain hat and a poncho, and it's an hour drive to the venue. I will hug my sweet dog Jasper and hit the road and have some fun. I hope everyone has a really lovely weekend.

I hope the rain doesn't follow them. If it does, there's a song for that.

This is the way. Noem probably thinks umbrellas are cool, too.

Expand full comment

Umbrellas are cool except at outdoor shows. My guess is she melts in the rain, so its necessary for her.

I had forgotten about her "Meth:We're On It" campaign. We laughed our asses off here in Colorado when that came out a couple years ago. She's a true dingus through and through.

It would explain why she chose, of all the possible stories in her life on the farm, to publicize the one about shooting a dog. Of course, that could also apply to her editor.

For Kristi Noem, the cruelty is the point.

The whole MAGA/GOP point is cruelty.

By the way, we adopted a dog who killed our chickens. We rehomed her, didn't shoot her.

At yesterday’s meeting of the library’s Early Book Club (Blue Earth, MN), I shared This American Ex-Wife … and also boldly predicted that SD Gov. Kristi Noem would be selected as The Diingus of the Werk. Thank you, Lyz, for making me a visionary in my own mind.😺😻🙀😸

My cat has some advice for Kristi Noem: "Hey Kristi, maybe your base would calm down about the puppy murder if you let them smoke some weed."

OMG! “Is a cat advising Kristi Noem?” had me in stitches! Then you followed up the Ding-oree (Dingus honoree) with the Man v. Bear debate and I nearly choked on my Honey Nut Cheerios! What a fantastic start to my Friday. Thank you, Lyz, for being You!
