“Part of the jouissance of the moment is that Daniels didn’t play nice: She yelled, she got messy, and she still won.” Amen to that. Thank you as well for noting that Daniels absolutely paid a price for her courage. Let’s not forget that her daughter was threatened. Great essay, thanks!
I want to quote the illustrious KC and his Sunshine Band when I say, upon hearing the verdict, that it would be now appropriate to "do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight." I'm not really cheering, but it is nice to see a court that bent over backwards to accommodate the orange menace still deliver a just verdict. See me about cheering once the appeals are exhausted and the election is over.
I appreciate this post about Stormy, and pushing back against the notion of a "perfect" witness. This is another form of respectability politics - as if only the virginal, chaste, and pure are beyond reproach. Clearly grounded in patriarchy.
Japanese Cherry trees, Chinese Pandas: gestures of peace and friendship. May the Pandas bring stronger karma than the trees did.
Strong women are Donald Trump kryptonite. He can’t stand them. I think he’s afraid of them because he feels inadequate, if you catch my drift. He manages that by bullying them, assaulting them, cursing them. All of his true heroes are male dictators who routinely kill women to keep men in charge. I hope DJT goes into a jail cell some day and I hope a woman puts him there.
I too had to look it up. Drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring when it comes to jouissance ;) I almost fell into the rabbit crevasse of Lacanian philosophy!
Oh, Lyz! Once again you have made my Friday! After reading the Dingus, I think I will just go ahead and vote for Stormy in November! The piece about Wally the Walrus’ persistence was delightful - we need more people like Wally! As for Manhattans, I always take mine with a spoonful of cherry juice - cocktail perfection! For a recent friend’s memorial, I had a local florist create a Manhattan in flowers and it was a hit! PS - I just made a donation to the IAAF.❤️
I had to look it up as well. But digging a little deeper brought a more nuanced meaning than the first dictionary definition my search produced: "This paradoxical phenomenon of deriving a kind of satisfaction through suffering, or pleasure through pain is what Lacan designates as jouissance." It's such a good word and the perfect way of capturing the pleasure through the pain of the moment. Also, it's kind of a pun in a way, because it has sexual connotations. I'll go give myself a swirly now
The only swirly I know is dunking someone's head in a toilet bowl. I'm guessing it doesn't mean that--and debating whether I should look for more definitions!
My husband toasted yesterday's news with a Schadenfreude: 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz rye, 1/2 oz Campari, 1/2oz simple syrup.
As to the pandas, YAY! Years ago we took the kids to DC and on our first day, hit the zoo. And it happened to be Tai Shan's 4th birthday (he's since gone back to China, also his parents.) They made "cakes" for the pandas out of ice with beets and bamboo, and tiered them with more bamboo. Tai Shan was the only one who seemed to be eating his.
And now back to dancing in the streets! All 34. Wowza!
Stormy is not only NOT Dingus of the Week or ever, she is an American hero.
How fitting a porn star brought down Donald Trump(although Stormy is much more than that).
After all, she saw the emperor without his clothes.
(Celebrating this morning with a mushroom omelette).

“She isn’t perfect, but no one is — and no one should have to be perfect to be believed, listened to, and seen as a full human being.”
FULL STANDING OVATION for this.

When the verdict came in I realized I had been holding my breath for months and months. I'm with you, not cheering but definitely breathing easier.

E. Jean Carroll and Stormy Daniels! "Who run the world, girls!"
Girl. I am a 51-year-old high school English teacher of more than 20 years and you made me have to look up, "jouissance." F*ing French! ;)

Ha!
Question about Alito and his wife’s flags:
What would have been his reaction if she had flown a pro choice flag? Or a Biden-Harris flag?
Why wonder? None of those things would ever happen in this particular universe.
But it's not too late for people to start seeding the properties of SC Justices with BLM flags...
Beautifully put, Lyz.
Your clarity, focus, wit and style is why I pay!
I will now slink back into anon obscurity.
What a span of 24 hours. I do feel 34 times better today than yesterday. Thank you Stormy. We'll be drinking Manhattans tonight.

Thank you for the delight that is jouissance. I'd never heard that before.

Thank you!
Ms Daniels should market a butt plug with Trump’s face on it.
Absolutely perfect that Pecker ( the guy and the body part) would be Trump’s downfall. Or momentary downfall. The man is a cockroach.
Thanks for goosing me to look up "jouissance," a delightful word no longer absent from my lexicon.
You really *do* bring the value-adds, lyz.

I really missed an opportunity to suggest drinking a dark and stormy, which is one of my favorite rum-based drinks!
We ❤️ NYC! I was so happy to get home from physical therapy and see the news. Kinda made me miss the glory days of twitter.
