For those who spend time every day deleting bot-generated emails, Substack followers, and the like from your life while thinking "why can't AI do this?", the answer that it can. But it won't. AI will be used to generate spam, not to manage it. This is a feature, not a bug. AI will be used to make the rich richer, and the poor poorer.
I'm not the first person to make this observation, but have you ever been frustrated by googling a simple question and all the results are SEO-optimized blathering with the one useful, relevant piece of information buried so far down in the drivel that you probably won't see it anyway as you scroll past the chaff? I'm certain AI will only make this worse. We'll have bots writing content for bots to read to push their rankings higher in the bot listings, and we humans who want to talk to other humans will have to invent a separate internet for ourselves to use. And then it'll be overrun with capitalist robots, lather, rinse, repeat.
I'm going off on a tangent here but society might benefit from an extremely localized Carrington Event targeted on Silicon Valley. Or we could take all these tech dinguses and make them spend a year and a day in the rural Midwest where you can't get internet or even cell service more than half the time and none of their stupid little apps work. My family in Iowa got internet from a tower in the next county and when the trees grew up taller and blocked the signal the ISP's response boiled down to "lmao sucks to be you". I now live 5 minutes away from a large software company in Wisconsin and I had to file a complaint with the FCC to get any internet at all because the sole ISP serving my address tried to weasel out of providing internet service to me.
Two things. First, Oklahoma Smokeshow was amazing. Second, do you think the GOP has been set to evil? I mean, MTG is going to get Jamaal Bowman killed.
I’m reminded of a sign I read by a striking writer: “AI doesn’t have childhood trauma.”
My worry is that AI will eventually get good enough to write scripts and that people won’t care if the scripts are bad because they are so easily entertained.
But maybe that’s just the snob or the cynic in me.
Ugh, all three Starbucks in my town unionized but then Starbucks decided to close them all. They were always very busy so it’s obvious union busting. I hope it doesn’t happen to the Iowa one
