The response to the bishop is harrowing. Somewhat predictable, given that she's a woman and evangelicalism hates women in leadership, BUT STILL. Asking for mercy is woke? Lord have mercy.

Espousing Christian values in a Christian house of worship is [checks notes] worthy of deportation. WWJD? Deport that bitch!

I miss who I was before learning about embalmed beef. Why would you and Wikipedia do that to me when I have shown you both nothing but appreciation and also money?

Now is probably as good a time as any to go vegetarian.

I am so sorry. I got carried away with my McKinley knowledge and forgot to realize the implications!!!

Yes, but I for one can't wait to tell my college kid, who wrote a paper about Czolgosz and how the socialists thought he was a plant. Also Assassins is a killer musical!

I made a point of NOT looking that up. I knew no good would come of that.

That’s wise. I am, once again, the victim of my own curiosity.

Bravo! There were so many Dingus moments this week, I couldn't choose. Perfect, Lyz!

Gotta hand it to the newsletter chat on this one who suggested the idea.

This is an amazing Dingus of the Week and so, so perfect. It says everything I have been trying to say to myself and my kids, but better. Lyz - I am so grateful for the way you can take the true terror of the moment and still get a smile out of people. I hope, over the next four years, we have more Bishops and less of the people who condemned her.

Barely related to the actual newsletter at all, but I just booked a night in Cedar Rapids (seeing The Wallflowers, again, but this time with my sister and not my husband who thinks all of their songs sound the same), and we LOVE Mexican food. Lyz and any other CR dwellers, which Mexican places are your favorites?

Edited to add: we're not looking for small-plate Mexican; we're looking for either hole-in-the-wall or "this clearly used to be a Hardee's," traditional-Midwest-Tex-Mex. Don't get me wrong, I love them all, but I know what we're going to want :)

Well, Marion is the birthplace of Carlos O'Kelly's the Irish/Mexican establishment (it's all Mexican food). And they have a special place in my heart because they donated a fiesta party to my daughter when the pandemic shut down her birthday. And you cannot go wrong there. I also LOVE Taco Depot on First Avenue (it used to be a Long John Silvers). Be careful the margaritas are STRONG. I'll let others chime in but these two would be my go-tos.

Awesome, and yes everyone else please chime in, because sister and I **love** reading menus in advance of a trip together. The more recs, the merrier.

I second the Carlos O'Kelly's recommendation, even though the one I used to take my kids to has closed.

I also love Villa's Patio in Marion. It used to be a Wendy's. They mix up the guac right at your table. And when we say Cedar Rapids or Marion, it's literally a 10 minute drive max to one place or the other so don't worry about drive time too much! And I also want to get tix to that Wallflowers show. I love them too!

We are also both going to Illinois for Father's Day and taking a route through Marion so it will be really easy to catch a second Marion establishment ;)

There were definitely still options for Wallflowers tickets! My post-COVID hobby has been going to see the bands from the '90s that I liked as a youngster and now LOVE as an adult. I saw The Wallflowers in 2022 (MN State Fair opener for Counting Crows), 2023 (in Des Moines), and 2024 (Davenport), and I think I've liked each show better and better! Long way of saying, if it's in your budget/schedule, don't hesitate!

I think it is time we stop using the term "sitting congressman" as a term that is supposed to hold some weight or level of respect or decorum. Now it's pretty much is the same as "area man" or "Florida man".

This was perfect. I sent the good bishop a postcard telling her how much I appreciated her speech. This is the address:

The Rt Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde

Episcopal Church House

Mount St Alban

Washington, DC 20016-5094

USA

I recommend postcards since the text is immediately visible so no one has to worry about what’s in an envelope.

Has Matt Walsh been Dingus of the Week yet? It seems like his jersey should have been retired from winning so often.

thanks, karen, good suggestion. i thought about all the hate mail she's probably getting and wondered if sending a card in an envelope might be problematic.

Republicans seem to like their Christianity the same as they like the Constitution, where they get to pick and choose the parts they like and denounce any that they don't. God Bless Bishop Budde, who actually has read, and understood, the teachings of Christ.

The Bishop's book How We Learn to be Brave is inspirational and available as an audio book read by the author. Also, even your footnotes are funny. Thanks for DOTW.

I am a lover of both all things West Wing AND Good Wife (and Good Fight, Evil, etc etc). Mandy was dispatched because she was annoying, but also because characters serve the story, not vice versa. Yes. I'm a WWWingnut. And no, the sexism of the late 1990s early aughts doesn't hold up, but a lot of other stuff does.

I love this dingus/anti-dingus approach. If folks are in the mood to send support or protest say - an unfair firing of a meteorologist Sam Kuffel for protesting Musk's Nazi salute on her personal IG page, you can send an email to newsdesk@cbs58.com.
