Getting ready to send my oldest son off to Uzbekistan for two weeks. The average temperature right now is about 105 degrees and while my anxiety is in overdrive, this trip seems safer than sending him to Texas in the 100 degree heat for so many reasons that have nothing to do with the heat.
Thank you! I am sure he will. My anxiety is in overdrive, but I cannot let it get in the way of his absolute joy and excitement for this trip. He will be attending math lectures for 5 days and then cultural travel around the country. The pictures from previous student trips don't even seem real.
My first therapist (this was a number of years ago) used several pithy phrases that I still remember and repeat: "Feelings are not facts," "The only way out is through," "Go fearward," and the ultimate banger "I can't talk to you right now. I'll have to talk to you some other time."
Did you ever try the bourbon slush? (Slush of Georgia?) I need to make some but I don't think there's room in my freezer AHAHAHAHAHAHAH sorry. Ahem. There's ALWAYS room for slush in the freezer (*throws out leg of lamb and chuck roast*)
I have a couple quarts of sour cherries in my freezer and on my way to making “sorbet” with a “splash” of white wine I took a turn towards “sour cherry rum slushee” and wow was it perfect.
I think the reason people are pessimistic about climate change is the very real worry that society will never punish oil executives to their liking. If new scientific innovations for energy generation and storage are commercialized via public or private enterprises, some very annoying people are going to say that capitalism saved the day.
I don't think anyone is confused about why people are pessimistic and filled with doom. But like Solnit is saying doom is a feeling not a system of analysis and not a mode of action. We obviously have valid reasons for feeling doom, but the argument at hand is that feeling shouldn't become your only way of operating through the world.
I think we can help encourage people if a fact like "The price of solar panels has dropped 90% in 2 decades" could be followed up with a fun anecdote like "and when the CEO of ExxonMobil heard that he started crying and pooped his pants in front of his family and now his children don't respect him."
Lyz, I’ll have to disagree with you on the aliens. They’d tune into our radio sphere, listen to the ongoing xenophobia and warfare for 24 Earth hours, and promptly nope out of there before they got anywhere close to Earth
Sorry, I misread. Do you think they’re like Star Trek type aliens where they’re humanoid for the most part? I’m personally thinking it’s going to be something like the film Arrival, in that we have no idea how to communicate with them.
Yeah so if the rich people that own the governments would make them fucking fix the climate, that’d be great. I’m sick of being sick every time I drive somewhere. But where is our alternative? They can all go down in history as the people who killed the planet. Sociopaths.
I'm one of those folks who get pretty cynical about climate change and it actually being addressed. I want to be different! Will read that article for sure. But everyone who can afford it really ought to adopt a majority plant based diet. I think that's the number one thing individuals can do after voting
The aliens were so much part of the culture of my childhood. That's when that book by Whitley Streiber came out about his experience with aliens. ET, Close Encounters, Star Fucking Wars. Unfortunately for the aliens (a rude name, too) they are SOOO 70s/80s. If they want proper outrage and attention, they have to come in through the southern border.
I'm dying to see Barbie, and the Ken video just makes it that much more important.
As a (hopefully) nearly-post-menopausal woman, can I just say I'm ready for less heat? Can I at least get in sync with my husband, who is cold when I'm sweating, and hot when I'm cold? The Pacific NW used to be so temperate and now it is just hot everywhere. Misters are not going to fix it. Elizabeth Warren might.
oooh i've also driven past a randomly burning median, only my experience was in ohio. and honestly, i was just like "eh, that checks out...it's just ohio."
Highly recommend this website that has spent years debunking climate deniers claims with actual science and links to papers from climate scientists. Articles are free to anyone who wants to learn from the science and the answers to debunk the denial claims;

I hope he stays safe!

There are very few places on earth more dangerous than Texas right now. Your son is choosing wisely.

Oh man SPOILER ALERT. That is the slush I'm making this week. I can't wait to try it.
Well be sure to put it in multiple small containers so it can freeze faster. So you can get to the eating/drinking sooner!
I tried it and loved it! Still have some left.
I add more tea, whiskey, or OJ afterwards, depending on my mood.

Caleb, they are literally here. There was a whole congressional hearing about it. There is nothing to disagree on

that's only if they are aliens that are smarter than we are. if they aren't, then they'll just hang out on planet earth and get dissed.

You should read that Rebecca Solnit article it's really hopeful and so is the Bill McKibbin one.

"This is like dinosaurs getting their picture taken with an asttoid." Says it all.
Lyz, I read your book, "God Land." Wow! Loved it and could relate. What a ride. Can we get an amen?
