I was somewhat surprised that SHS hasn't already a Dingus of the Week, but she really earned this one!

In some contrast, I think the way that Doug Emhoff and Tim Walz are existing and responding in their secondary/supportive roles relative to Kamala Harris is refreshing. I hope it doesn't come across like I think they deserve special recognition, it's just something I am noticing. Prominent examples of secure, non-toxic masculinity are rare. So much so that the only other person I can think of right now who fits that bill is Mr. Rogers.

Yeah I was shocked she hadn't been dingus either. And I thought Doug's response was better and more thoughtful than most people's.

Most of her greatest feats of dingusry preceded this weekly feature, which seems impossible but time is moving differently. 2016-2020 were the longest 20 years of my entire life.

Can we have a lifetime achievement version of the dingus of the week?!? I’d like to nominate a few others

Exactly.

I find it refreshing, too. I'm hoping these prominent examples of their masculinity and humanity become normalized.

Something about this whole thing reminds me of the time I wrote a letter to Ms. Magazine (back when I used to get a hard-copy version delivered in my mail), responding to an article about Full House that hollered, "Where are all the women?" I said, hey, I'm watching grown men change diapers, get food on the table, and mop floors. I find that refreshing, and it's about time.

That was almost 40 years ago, and it didn't become the norm then. So ... I don't know.

It also reminds me of Mary Chapin Carpenter's song He Thinks He'll Keep Her, which I think someone shared on the Discord. I had that album. I knew every word to every song on it. I sang along to that song ... how many times? But, at the time, I didn't think it applied to me. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

But why does every conversation about women seem to have to do with children. Granted being a mother - biological, step, or simply to fill in a space - is very important work. However, men are not always spoken of in context to being a father or not. and what about those without children for whatever reason - does that mean that person has no merit. When is this society going to be able to discuss people based on their believes and actions and dare i say compassion? it pains me and depresses me to say i don't think that day will ever come.

I’m looking for a job and a recruiter, might I add, a FEMALE recruiter, told me I needed to “humble myself” in this process. I said I worked very hard to get to where I am and you want me to accept less because I’m a woman? (And look, I have “humbled myself” by applying for roles I’m over qualified for but man… way to kick me when I’m down sister).

Expand full comment

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ve had a few female colleagues that have said I should be “happy to have a job” when I said conditions or compensation weren’t enough. We need to call that shit out.

On a semi related note, I had one HR person tell me that as a single mother, a step up, with its associated pressures and changes, was not for me. This was when I went for a promotion from within my own company. 🫠

That's the other side of "the guy in the same position as you makes more than you because he has a family," misogyny coin 😡

It sounds like that FEMALE recruiter is perpetuating Strategic Discrimination. This self feeding loop captures women and all marginalized people. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/strategic-discrimination/81C38A8978F66319231DC8A0D5D2E6A5

I vaguely knew Sarah Huckabee Sanders had done/said something, but I didn’t want to look it up. I’m getting so tired of having to keep up with this shit. I knew I could count on you to fill me in and in a way that makes me laugh. I’m stealing this line and I’ll probably have plenty of opportunities to use it: “do your arms hurt from carrying all that water for the patriarchy?”

Expand full comment

Yeah, this was so so good. Especially this: "Huckabee Sanders’ statement implicitly accuses the only person of color and the only woman in the presidential race of being uppity. In one move, she managed to insult blended and nontraditional families and do a little racism and misogyny on the side."

I was once called "strident" by a man I would have called a friend, and it was finally pointed out to me this week how sexist that was, that a man would never be labeled strident. Well now I'm a post-menopausal woman with no fucks to give. Call me whatever you want, Imma steamroll you anyway. #StayHumbleMyAss

Excellent dingus this week.

A Dingus worse than Huckabee...🎶

Epitome of Internalized Misogyny!

Hey, whatever happened to Lecturngate? The allegedly misappropriated funds used to party in Paris?

Michelle Wolf! Love her, and loved what she said about Ivanka at the White House Correspondents dinner, that Ivanka was like the Diaper Genie of the Administration. "On the outside it looks sleek, but on the inside...still full of shit." Much worse than the smokey eyeshadow look of Sarah's being made from burning lies that got Michelle in so much hot water.

Michelle Wolf's White House Correspondents Dinner speech and Steven Colbert's are both brilliant, brave examples of speaking truth to power.

What is alarming is this wasn’t even the dumbest thing Sarah Huckabee has said.

I’d like to point out even when Black women have kids they’re a problem - so many black women internalize the baby mama even if they are married.

The only time I ever made my husband wear his wedding ring was during Lamaze classes because I didn’t want to be looked at that way. And there were plenty of other couples who weren’t married in the class.

When my kids were young and we would go out as a family my husband would get “citizen of the year” awards if my kids were well behaved. I would get shocked faces.

It’s horrible - I was lucky - my kids were pretty easy going but I know I was always concerns about how we presented ourselves at “story time”, amusement parks etc - places where kids should be kids.

If there is any America demographic that should go “4B movement” (google 4B South Korea) it should be black women.

I have been talking about the 4B movement with people recently. Everyone I’ve told is appalled and I’m here like the Mandalorian going, “this is the way!”

And meanwhile, white kids (especially boys!) are climbing all over the seats, staring at people, yelling, throwing temper tantrums they're way too old for...the list goes on.

Right. Absofuckinglutely NEVER.

My sister once pronounced Mike Huckabee's name as "Hucklebee" and I will never hear it differently. Thanks for reminding us that women often play a role in maintaining inequality for other women. I'm a stepmother, and I'm pretty sure I've been laid completely low by parenthood at times. I don't know how my mom did it and earned the respect of my stepbrothers and sisters, but my sense is she was just herself, which is what I have tried. The long game is the deal, there. Now things are great.

As soon as I started reading, I was like oh no, please tell me no one said UPPITY. And damned if she didn’t just tiptoe right around saying it, though blatantly thinking it. Gotta keep those colored women in their place. Wouldn’t want them getting ideas or anything. God, shit like that makes me absolutely ragey and I'm a 49 year old middle class white woman. I can't even FATHOM the depth of unprocessed rage women of

color must feel on a daily basis. I have hope for the future, buttttttt, somedays burning it all down has real merit.

It always amuses me when some Republikaren in the public eye tells us how women need to be humble or silent or whatever. It's like: you first, hun.

But I do feel some pity for SHS. How was she going to be anything else than sucky with a father like that?

Your mention of the Mormon TikTok mom’s all looking the same reminds me of this post I saw where someone put up side by side before and afters of Laura Loomer, Lara Trump, Kristi Noem and Kimberly Guilfoyle and now I can’t unsee it! They all use the same person for very bad filler it seems😬.

Well she just insulted all the Nuns and the Saints too. You don’t need to be any kind of mother, step, adoptive, birth or whatever. Women need to do better for each other. I was appalled. Tired of all the discussion on why Democrats can’t get the last 10% of the black vote as if we are entitled, we need to turn our attention to white women.
