Republikaren !!!! I'm dying here!

She showed what an idiot she was as press secretary to that slimy guy, but this really takes the cake. And the people that voted for her! Unreal. I’m so glad I live in a blue state.

Poor Arkansas has to suffer these damn fools.

A truly pathetic state that corruptly managed to fabricate a BS excuse to prevent an abortion measure from making the ballot.

I vaguely knew Sarah Huckabee Sanders had done/said something, but I didn’t want to look it up. I’m getting so tired of having to keep up with this shit. I knew I could count on you to fill me in and in a way that makes me laugh. I’m stealing this line and I’ll probably have plenty of opportunities to use it: “do your arms hurt from carrying all that water for the patriarchy?”

Expand full comment

Yeah, this was so so good. Especially this: "Huckabee Sanders’ statement implicitly accuses the only person of color and the only woman in the presidential race of being uppity. In one move, she managed to insult blended and nontraditional families and do a little racism and misogyny on the side."

But why does every conversation about women seem to have to do with children. Granted being a mother - biological, step, or simply to fill in a space - is very important work. However, men are not always spoken of in context to being a father or not. and what about those without children for whatever reason - does that mean that person has no merit. When is this society going to be able to discuss people based on their believes and actions and dare i say compassion? it pains me and depresses me to say i don't think that day will ever come.

I’m looking for a job and a recruiter, might I add, a FEMALE recruiter, told me I needed to “humble myself” in this process. I said I worked very hard to get to where I am and you want me to accept less because I’m a woman? (And look, I have “humbled myself” by applying for roles I’m over qualified for but man… way to kick me when I’m down sister).

It sounds like that FEMALE recruiter is perpetuating Strategic Discrimination. This self feeding loop captures women and all marginalized people. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/strategic-discrimination/81C38A8978F66319231DC8A0D5D2E6A5

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ve had a few female colleagues that have said I should be “happy to have a job” when I said conditions or compensation weren’t enough. We need to call that shit out.

On a semi related note, I had one HR person tell me that as a single mother, a step up, with its associated pressures and changes, was not for me. This was when I went for a promotion from within my own company. 🫠

That's the other side of "the guy in the same position as you makes more than you because he has a family," misogyny coin 😡

I think that I shall never see

A Dingus worse than Huckabee...🎶

Epitome of Internalized Misogyny!

Hey, whatever happened to Lecturngate? The allegedly misappropriated funds used to party in Paris?

Michelle Wolf! Love her, and loved what she said about Ivanka at the White House Correspondents dinner, that Ivanka was like the Diaper Genie of the Administration. "On the outside it looks sleek, but on the inside...still full of shit." Much worse than the smokey eyeshadow look of Sarah's being made from burning lies that got Michelle in so much hot water.

Michelle Wolf's White House Correspondents Dinner speech and Steven Colbert's are both brilliant, brave examples of speaking truth to power.

I was somewhat surprised that SHS hasn't already a Dingus of the Week, but she really earned this one!

In some contrast, I think the way that Doug Emhoff and Tim Walz are existing and responding in their secondary/supportive roles relative to Kamala Harris is refreshing. I hope it doesn't come across like I think they deserve special recognition, it's just something I am noticing. Prominent examples of secure, non-toxic masculinity are rare. So much so that the only other person I can think of right now who fits that bill is Mr. Rogers.

Yeah I was shocked she hadn't been dingus either. And I thought Doug's response was better and more thoughtful than most people's.

Most of her greatest feats of dingusry preceded this weekly feature, which seems impossible but time is moving differently. 2016-2020 were the longest 20 years of my entire life.

Exactly.

Can we have a lifetime achievement version of the dingus of the week?!? I’d like to nominate a few others

As I’ve seen more from Doug Emhoff I’ve been so impressed. Most men would feel threatened to be overshadowed by their wife. Especially someone who gave up their successful career (he was an entertainment attorney in LA).

I find it refreshing, too. I'm hoping these prominent examples of their masculinity and humanity become normalized.

Something about this whole thing reminds me of the time I wrote a letter to Ms. Magazine (back when I used to get a hard-copy version delivered in my mail), responding to an article about Full House that hollered, "Where are all the women?" I said, hey, I'm watching grown men change diapers, get food on the table, and mop floors. I find that refreshing, and it's about time.

That was almost 40 years ago, and it didn't become the norm then. So ... I don't know.

It also reminds me of Mary Chapin Carpenter's song He Thinks He'll Keep Her, which I think someone shared on the Discord. I had that album. I knew every word to every song on it. I sang along to that song ... how many times? But, at the time, I didn't think it applied to me. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Slightly off topic but I LOVE that album by MCC....great song too.

My sister once pronounced Mike Huckabee's name as "Hucklebee" and I will never hear it differently. Thanks for reminding us that women often play a role in maintaining inequality for other women. I'm a stepmother, and I'm pretty sure I've been laid completely low by parenthood at times. I don't know how my mom did it and earned the respect of my stepbrothers and sisters, but my sense is she was just herself, which is what I have tried. The long game is the deal, there. Now things are great.

When did ANYONE EVER suggest a white politician like Trump or oligarch like Musk be HUMBLE?????

Right. Absofuckinglutely NEVER.

Kiss my butt Sarah (and Lara and Melanomia and all the other GOP screwing women hating “woman” luminaries).

Second of all, I was listening to podcasts last night night when the first chapter of your book came on. DAMN, GIRL. I was so pissed I wanted to throw something. But, I didn’t.

Thirdly, I am a rabid Redditor, and I love to share your work. However, since Reddit uses anonymous posting, I can only share clips (fully attributed) but cannot share whole Substack articles, because they always contain a link with my name. My question: have you ever seen a workaround? Or, should I not share?

It astounds me how some Republican leaders continue to insult and degrade women. Yet women still support them -- not understanding how they're being undermined.

Expand full comment

Brainwashing and intimidation are real.

To me it smacks of righteous "Not Like Other Girls" energy. I'm convinced these women think they're special and that if all of the horrible, horrible plans the right is launching come to fruition, the "Not Like Other Girls" will somehow maintain their power. Good luck with that, sister. Few things are sadder to me than women who don't see that they're simply willing and enthusiastic tools of the patriarchy.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, breaking through the glass floor?

an especially excellent (terrible) dingus this week, Lyz! I'd add that the context of her comment--the story about tearing up seeing her kid get ready for a daddy-daughter dance (ew) and her daughter saying, "you can be pretty someday, too" (is pretty the thing she's being taught to aim for? I bet it is!) makes the whole thing that much grosser.
