"Like a tiny little pirate queen." "Wolf on the lam." What a Friday to be alive! I had a Lilith, when I left my marriage, had an accident, and totaled the car which was in my husbands name--he wouldn't sign the title over and the woman at the insurance agency said, "oh, been there, done that. I even have the t-shirt." When I called her THREE YEARS LATER to say he finally signed it, she immediately said, oh, good, I have the check right here on my desk. I've been thinking of you. Maybthe blessings be falling on that Lillith's head.
“ From there, the dominoes began to fall. Again, not because they had been nicely organized and then tipped over, but because an entire cafeteria tray of them had been teetering precariously on the arm of a chair and this guy brushed them with bag #2 as he rode by on his post-crime bike.”
❤️ thank you. I think the two possible responses to this pun/joke (?) are “laugh” or “immediately search the dark web for an assassin to punt me into the sea”
It also reminded me to buy your book, so I placed an order at Target this morning. I'll keep a dark web tab open in my browser in case I need it after reading.
Ms Phillips, why not both? You're worth it. We're all worth the luxury of fabulous options. Thank you for making Lyz's jam TGIF-tastic today, and give 'em hell out there.
Tom Waterman’s garbage quote had been my Quote of 2023. But, it has been eclipsed by “If you [garbage bag] had any more rights, you’d be an assault rifle.” Because, sadly, it’s true. Well done, Lyz Lenz.
Otters and Orcas. Yes indeed. I was thinking "how great is that" when I read about the otter and her claim on HER space.
Also, thank you so much for posting your interview with Joy Reid - I wanted to watch but wasn't able to. You were GREAT, Lyz. Nice pod background, too. Your description of what GOPers are doing is spot on - there is only biblical logic to it, no other. Trying to understand what they are doing through a democratic lens is not possible.
That otter is absolutely a “tiny little pirate queen”. All hail her majesty. Also, both of the dingi were exquisite this week. Buying Taylor’s book just got added to my to do list for today.
This is a precious gift indeed. Thank you for putting it into words: That I could hold her vulnerable heart in my hands and protect it for her, until she’s ready to take it again is the honor of friendship.
“Justice Thomas Waterman wrote, “It would be ironic and troubling to be the first state Supreme Court in the nation to hold that trash set out in a garbage can for collection is entitled to more constitutional protection than a woman’s interest in autonomy and dominion over her own body.“
Iowa Republicans: hold my (not produced by Anhauser-Busch I swear) beer
I've been furious at so many things for so long that I swear I have nothing but cortisol pumping through my body. This DotW, though, was like floating down a lazy river of oxytocin on an innertube with a fruity cocktail. Just what I needed. All hail the tiny little pirate queen. Long may she reign!
Happy Friday to me! You and Taylor have collectively made my whole-ass day. Thank you.
Also, did you see your shout-out in Maggie Smith's newsletter today, in which she interviewed Midwest editor Megan Stielstra? I particularly loved this bit, which made me think of you before they even shouted out your name: "The Midwestern writers I read—my god, so many*—write about our streets and fields and lakes with such deep respect, such profound interrogation, such love. When Adrian Matejka’s on a mic, you’re in Indiana. He’s not explaining the place to you. He’s not selling it or defending it. He puts you there. Same with Eve Ewing in Chicago. Nandi Comer in Michigan. Louise Erdrich in Minnesota. Cut open Maggie Smith and you’ll find Ohio. You feel the complexity of these places through the human beings who live there, bleed there. They see what’s beautiful and what needs to change. It has a lot to do, I think, with the Baldwin line: “I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”"
The bicycle getaway - so rich! Reminds me of the time my husband so exquisitely performed a springboard clothesline on a dude on a bike as he sailed away from a C-store with a brown paper bag of stolen cigs...in my head I hear the music of Miss Gulch lol https://youtu.be/r4kiXh8YOzk
This was exquisite in a way that makes me want to print it out (sorry, grew up reading on paper) and highlight the good parts, which would be all of it. Literally every paragraph.

My favorite quote of the week.
Usually when I LOL it is not literally out loud but let me tell you that "The wolf is on the lam" got me. I almost howled.
Taylor is the most hilarious!!!! It's almost like she should be paid MORE FOR HER WRITING! *pointedly looks at David Zaslav*

I love it when Kansas City enters the chat even if it's for dingus reasons.
Immaculate dingusry this week.
Thank you, thank you for this wonderful bit of comic relief. Katie Porter is a national treasure.
This times a zillion. I didn't know Schoolmarm Hot was a thing, but (fans self to fend off vapors of arousal) oh my.
Katie is an AMAZING wonder! Our country needs her in higher political office kicking more ass!

Just bought Taylor's book. Know what sold it? Wolf on the lam.

I love a good bank heist story. I even wrote one: https://medium.com/the-archipelago/how-to-avoid-a-bank-robbery-be9b3bb994c4
Your “what am I drinking” made me thing of the song & video “Bonfire at Tina’s”, by Ashley McBryde. Check it out if you don’t know it.
