Dingus Madness was a lot of fun. Thank you to everyone who voted -- we are all expert CAPTCHA solvers now!
And speaking of madness, in less than 2 months High Fructose Corn Sweat will run across Iowa the long way for the second year in a row. The readers from this community and the Flyover Politics Discord are our biggest cheerleaders and I am eternally grateful. The relay dates for 2024 are June 7, 8, and 9 and we'll have pictures, videos, and silliness to share on the team instagram page @highfructosecornsweat that whole weekend.
“Not Kari Lake and Kyrsten Sinema looking around at the state of women’s rights in Arizona and grabbing their Kohl’s pearls and asking, “How could this happen to us?!”
It happened because you wanted it to, ma’ams.”
THIS! I’m actually more mad at the women who voted for this ideology trajectory- it didn’t start/end with Donald Trump. We’ll see if women finally collectively square up against this or if it’s just going to be a minority of White women and the rest of us - who would die or be jailed first
I don't think I've played a bracket as intensely as I did the Dingus bracket. I was all in on the Supreme Court because they fucking should have known better about so many things. Retirements, selling their retirements for personal gain. Hubris.
I am hoping you come to Oregon - Portland is a bit of a trek, but doable.
"Clutching their Kohl's pearls." Laughed myself into a near asthma attack. It feels like you have your finger in the pulse of Arizona. I've been here nearly 34 years and I have never read such a perfect scathing description of a certain type of Arizona woman. I remember coming out of the library one day and someone asked me to sign a petition about abortion. I drew a deep breath today no, as they were always "pro-life," and the guy very hesitantly said, "It's to put the right to one on the ballot." I snatched that clipboard out of his hand and signed as fast as I could. He was shocked--I was the only woman who would sign it that day. We need to stop standing in our own way.
Speaking of "being irritated at my state", the despicable Kari Lake grew up in Iowa and went to the University of Iowa. Maybe I can take solace in her having lived in Arizona since 1994, and perhaps they are responsible for her radicalization.
I have a list a mile long and need to get going on that, but let's procrastinate and reply to Lyz's DotW, shall we?
First, I'll be in LA when you are! We're visiting family, likely hitting up the Getty Villa and maybe the plain Getty, other art museums, the beach, etc.
Second, dollar stores are crap and not the bargain they seem to be, and prey on the poor. The "engulf and devour" attitude of Wall St. is also crap and preys on all of us.
Third, daydreaming plans to head to the pacific NW and now must hit up the Sports Bra!
Finally, abortion is healthcare, trans rights are human rights, and Kari Lake can suck it!
1. Just finished your book and am highly tempted to drive to Iowa and "hypothetically" beat the daylights out of your ex-husband. 2. The link to the POS who created the Arizona law was astounding and disgusting 3. OJ made me cry, because the whole scenario was so insane and public and I was in my 20s going "BUT NAKED GUN" but he clearly did it but fuck Nicole but racism but misogyny .....LOTS of emotion.
I just wrote my substack on Arizona. Trump is criticizing Arizona's total ban on abortion, but not the total bans on abortion in 14 other states. States that voted for him in 2020. Does he think all the people who voted for him in those states in 2020 are perfectly happy with a total ban on abortion and he doesn't have to worry about them? Saying the decision is up to the states doesn't mean people in each state get to vote on abortion, like he's give us all a gift. What exactly do Trump and Kari Lake think Governor Hobbs can do to reverse this?
Ok, the 'grabbing' of their 'Kohl's pearls' sent meeeeeeeee! So damn perfect. Thank you.

I love that SportsBra sent you a care package. Well deserved. And if I were your kid, I would steal a couple, too. Share the love, mama.

it’s just another maddening day here in the United States of Have We All Gone Fucking Insane.
Kari Lake. Why, oh, why? The return of "pearl clutching," yay!
Yay, women's sports and Caitlan Clark and Dawn Staley! BTW, my son and I both forgot the men's championship was on.
Dingus of the Year: I still think the winner should've been Mitch since he essentially created the current version of SCOTUS, but I get it.
"So I think that when you keep your expectations super super low, you can be pleasantly surprised." YES!
Dingus of the Week is one of the highlights of my week and never disappoints. Thank you, and hope you have some lovely The Spy Who Loved Mezcals!

I was under the (mistaken) impression that The Sports Bra had closed. Happy to see that’s not the case!
