If someone does give the book to the bride-to-be at a wedding shower, can you please make sure to take a picture of their face and share it with the group?
Those are such good book club questions! I will note that roughly 15 years ago, after I left my husband, several women at a small community event told me, separately, that they admired me but weren't brave enough to leave their marriages. Note: I wasn't brave, I was desperate. Keep pissing off the patriarchy, Lyz, we love you for it!
I loved your new book. Also wanted to share this link with anyone who might be interested. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/partnered-with-a-survivor-david-mandel-and/id1497442027. These folks are building on the work of the late Evan Stark in hopefully reversing the harm family court does on the protective parent and children in custody and DV cases while privileging abusers.
Addendum: I apologize for sharing what may come across as unsolicited advice on a difficult and complex topic and hope it was not offensive to anyone. I need help with some things, I am isolated, I am searching, I love this “community”, which is full of joy and support, and I hope to add to that joy and support. When I find something that has value to me, my instinct is to share in case it helps someone else, too. I did not fully consider the impact of the comment on all readers and have made that mistake a number of times, I’m afraid.
Definitely going to check this out! I had a protective order served on my ex, but since he didn’t contest it, it was the equivalent of heresay (no hearing = no findings = no proof)…he got 50% custody.
I’m so sorry. I also recommend in that case Children of Coercive Control by Evan Stark and his prior books may also be good resources. I’m learning, too; society needs to know. Family court has some toxic patterns that penalize victims. So does medicine. Good luck my dear.
You gotta get on a Crooked Media pod while you are in CA- Hysteria is the obvi choice, but Lovett or Leave It would be great. Josh Gondelman will be on the show in DC and maybe he can help :)
Holy cow! You all are making my head spin with all the possibilities. I just finished a delightful debut novel, The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers by Samuel Burr. It's a warm tale about the bonds of friendship and meaning of family in its many shades. The feature motif is puzzles of all sorts, including the always puzzling search for oneself -- a fun, fascinating read for wordsmiths and puzzle lovers.
"force your book group to talk about the patriarchy" cracks me up!

If you need a roadie for your concert tour, I'm your man.

Thank you! I will definitely check his books out.
I just turned on the tv by chance and saw you on CBC Newsworld!
Looking forward to attending one of them!

The first time I've ever been jealous of the West Coast
I hope you'll come to Portland at some point; I've been telling my wife about your writings and we'd love to come see you speak.
Just throwing it out there that Portland, OR would LOVE to see you and Powells Books is a renowned, can’t miss stop while passing through.

California is more than the Bay Area and Los Angeles - why three events in Los Angeles?
So, when are you coming to Chicago?
I was just there last month at Women and Children First
Sorry I missed you. One of my favorite book stores.
